How to make Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls On The Stove Top

  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the hamburger, sausage, diced onion, minced garlic, oregano, and basil. Sauté until the hamburger and sausage are fully cooked, and the onions are almost translucent.

  2. While the meat and onion mixture is browning, dice the cabbage.

  3. Once the meat mixture is done, add the beef broth, butter, spaghetti sauce, cabbage, salt, and pepper to the pot.

  4. Stir everything well, cover the pot with a lid, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 25-30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded together.

  5. While the cabbage mixture is simmering, cook the jasmine rice separately according to the package instructions.

  6. Once the cabbage mixture is ready and the rice is cooked, add the cooked rice to the cabbage mixture. Mix well to incorporate the rice with the rest of the ingredients.

  7. Let the dish sit for a few more minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Tips To Make This Deconstructed Cabbage Recipe A Success:

Prep Work:

Have all your ingredients chopped, measured, and ready to go before you start cooking. This will help the process go smoothly.

Browning the Meat:

When browning the hamburger and sausage, make sure to break the meat into smaller pieces for even cooking. You can drain excess fat if needed, depending on the fat content of the meat.

Sauteing the Aromatics:

Sauté the onion and garlic until the onions are translucent and the garlic is fragrant. This will release their flavors into the dish.

Choosing Broth:

Consider your flavor preferences when selecting beef or chicken broth. Beef broth may give a richer taste, while chicken broth can be milder.

Cabbage Size:

Make sure the cabbage pieces are roughly the same size for even cooking. You can shred the cabbage for a different texture.

Adjusting Seasoning:

Taste the dish before pressure cooking and adjust the seasoning to your liking. You can always add more salt, pepper, or herbs at this stage.

Deglaze the Pot:

After sauteing the meat and aromatics, you can deglaze the pot by adding a bit of broth and scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. This will enhance the flavor of the dish.

Rice Separately:

Cooking the rice separately can help you control the rice's texture. You can add the rice when serving to ensure it doesn't overcook.

Stir Before Serving:

After the pressure cooking is done, give the dish a good stir to mix everything well before serving.

Garnishes:

Consider adding fresh herbs like parsley or grated Parmesan cheese as a garnish to enhance the dish's presentation and flavor.

Reheating: When reheating leftovers, add a little extra broth or water to maintain the desired consistency, as the rice may absorb more liquid over time.

Customize:

Feel free to customize this dish with your favorite vegetables, such as bell peppers, carrots, or zucchini. You can also experiment with different spices and herbs to create unique flavors.

Portion Control:

If making ahead for meal prep, portion the dish into individual servings for easy reheating and portion control.

Enjoy your deconstructed cabbage dish, and don't be afraid to get creative with the ingredients and flavors to make it your own!
