How to Make Classic Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Casserole
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cook the Sausage with Vegetables:
In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until it starts to brown. Add the diced onion and chopped bell pepper to the skillet. Continue cooking until the sausage is fully cooked and the vegetables are softened and fragrant. Drain any excess fat and set aside.
Prepare the Egg Mixture:
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, salt, pepper, and dry mustard until well combined.
Assemble the Casserole:
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle the sausage, onion, and bell pepper mixture over the bread cubes. Then, layer the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the sausage mixture.
Pour the Egg Mixture:
Carefully pour the egg mixture over the top of the assembled casserole, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
Bake the Casserole:
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the eggs are set. You can check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the casserole; it should come out clean.
Serve:
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
Enjoy:
Serve warm and enjoy the rich, savory flavors of this classic breakfast casserole.
